Henry Leaman Jr. to Catharine A. Leaman, 30 August 1865
Phila. Aug. 30th 65

Dear Mother
I am well, and getting along as usual. I shall not make my fortune the first year nor even the second. I think I will make as much as you "coal oil people".

There is this uncomfortable about my business I know exactly how my money is spent; while you "coal oil dealers" get rid of yours without any trouble on your part.

I have no news. Like Wilkins Micauber I am waiting for something to turn up in the way of practice. It is consoling to think that it is the public's loss and not your own. You can however hope that / that the scales will fall from their eyes some day. I lack one element of success & that is a disposition to quacking. I believe I could do better if I had Beckie's Electricity, even then I would need her to "blow". I shall however go ahead as I am, trusting that there are still some, fools enough to believe in the truth.

Have not seen the Patterson's since Father was down.

If you know of any individuals who wish to invest not less than $10,000 with a daughter; I would be willing to accept proposals.

When one has nothing to say, they had better say nothing. I will now act on this principle.

Remember to Uncle, Aunt, & Everybody—with much love to all—Your aff. Son

Harry
