Charles Leaman to Mary E. Leaman, 24 October 1865

Sis:—
I have not heard from you since my last writing.

As I may not have another opportunity of writing for a couple of days, I will pen you a few lines before going in town, which I must do before tattoo for after that of late, we are not allowed out in consiquence of a murder which occured in Charlestown last week and it is supposed two Marines / done the deed and they are now in custody awaiting trial. They deny it however, and from what I can hear they will not be able to find sufficient proof to condemn them, for it appears the man (Mr Ramsey) was not aware that he was stabed until some minutes afterwards, although the wound was some nine inc. in length, injuring his lungs & liver, & fracturing a rib. From what I know and can hear I think the two men are innocent.

I expect to hear from you ere this reaches you. I will not make this any longer, for it would be no use, but I hope & think I will by my next writing have something more of interest to tell you. So I will only add that:—

            I am very well.

Charley
