Dear Friend
Your very kindly written missive was received one week ago. I am truly grateful for your kindness. One year has brought entirely new experiences to me. When I saw you one year ago I thought (I am sorry to say) of nothing but medicine. At least I made it a consideration of paramount importance. About July I had the first hemorrhage I ever had, just a short time before my brother's death. After that time I had them (hem) quite / frequent, and on the 1st of Nov. I started for Minn. I am now doing fine, and have raised blood but 2 since being here, and I expect to go East in April entirely well again. I am really delighted with Minn. The climate is pure & fresh, Mercury read this morning 30° below zero.

Anoka is my stopping place generally, but I travel around considerable. Minneapolis is a very pretty city. There you can see health and wealth, beauty and business as it were blended together, making a real charming place. "Minne-ha-ha Falls" are located 4 miles from the / city, and at this time the cascade is beautiful. St. Anthony Falls are just across the Mississippi from the city, and are quite attractive. The state of Minn. abounds in lakes, the principal one near here, is L. Minnetonka. the distance around it is 117 miles.

St. Paul the oldest settlement in the state, is quite handsome. The main part of the city is built on an elevated and picturesque plateau. A portion is also built on an amphitheatre of hills, which surround the city on three sides. The attainments of Minn. are all the more praise worthy / when we consider the state is but 13 years an admitted one. The land in this section is of an calcareous sandy character, and principally prairie. The people seem to be intelligent & refined on this Western frontier. I am very glad you expect to graduate so soon. Will you be at home in the summer? I hope to see you call at the University next winter again, then I truly hope to be there to see you. I thank you for calling there. I would be glad to answer your welcome letters, when ever you find it convenient to give me the opportunity. Thank you for the very good advice given, and hope to follow it. Remember me to J. Oliver, and the Academia boys. I remain very truly your friend J. S. Eves
