Washing City D C August 8 1861
 
            Dear sister
                                    we are still in camp McCall and and getting redy to start to the bridg we are going to try to make a brest work we recived marching orders to leave yesterday but we could not get redy to go we will go to day for sure we have got 2 days rations and then we will come back again we will make this our quarters and we will not strike our tents again we wer cald to arms about 3 oclock this morning but it was a false alarm there is good news this morning they say that the south has be gin to nock under I herd a gent say that Generl scott sayd that we wold eat our diner at home on newyears day and I herd some of our officers says that we will be home in 2 months I am wiling to stay as long as ther is a trater in the South well I supose that I must close for a while for we have got to go to drill for a while. well we are back agin and it is very warm here this morning and we will have a very warm trip to day the 9th Reg is gon / they are at the bridg I have not herd from Charly Cook since the day that he fainted but he is well or I wold herd some thing about him we have got a very good camp here now we have got good water here and plenty the first day or 2 that we come we was very near starved but we have got the very best of grub and plenty of it there was a good meny of the boys sick but they have all got well again but 5 Mr Graham is very bad they are going to take him to the city to day I think that he will stand a good chance to die he has been sick for a good while and he was not taken eny thing till now I have not been to see him this morning yet I do not think that that Gent that was at the house was at Manasses I seen him at at the station as we come there and I seen Hary Ferguson they belong to the 12 Reg and was at the rail road all the time we shot at a target this morning and our Compny did the best shooting that was don this morning we put 25 shot in the board 200 yards and 13 of them was in the senter there is a Compny of Calvelray come here now 
 
It is begining to look like as if we was going to do somthing in a little while but we wold like to get new guns before we go to fight we have got amunetion for Ming Rifels we got it this morning I sayd Ming Rifels but I ment Enfield Rifels Capton stewart is sick this morning he is taken the measels we think well I am glad that Bee is going to teach the same school again is will farming or what is he doing I am glad that how is gon home. I wold like to see him and all the rest of the boys of the 13th If there is eny of them that wold like to come back tell them that we will take them in our compny and when you wright to Ruth elin give my best respects to all of the frinds Georg McGhary and I wroght to Bod Brown 2 or 3 days ago Give my love to Dily Miller and Maggie Stewart and Mrs Burows to and all the rest of my friends. If eny such you find tell them to wright and give them the adress direct the same as be fore and then I will get the letters you wanted to know who all I have wrote to / I will tell you to you and Bee and ma and will also to John Johnston and Bob Brown and to Wily Miller I belive that is all and Mr Fleming and I rote to Moly Memon we also rote to Manda Yonker in Littel York I have told you all the news you wanted to know whether you wold put the Compnys name on the letters do not direct the same as be fore and they will come do not let eny body see this for I am in a hery for I have got to clean my gun and pack away my grub to march the post man is gon I cannot send this till tomorow
