Camp Tenneley Augest 15/61
 
            Dear sister
                                    I now take the plesur of letting you know howe we are getting along first I recived 3 letters yesterday 2 from home and one from Ruth Elin Brown there folks are all well you wanted to know if I got my Bible well I did get it and one letter with one dollar in it and I recived those things that Capt shannon had charly cook has rote home 6 or 8 times since he came in to camp and has not recived but one letter he is well and stands the camp life better than I though he wold he went out on picket guard last night he wants there folks to rite he sent some mony home did they get it the boys that was went in to the 9 Reg got there mony and we did not get eny I sent home for some I had to pay 40 cents for to pay the cooper and 25 cents for to pay the Bras Band and then I payed the capt what I borowed from him 
 
we have all the sick men out of the hospitle but 9 Mr graham was taken to the city he is not expected to live we have not herd from him since he was taken there there was some of our boys down there yesterday but they cold not see him they said that they cold not git in I am going to get a pas and go down tomorow to see him Ruth Elin Brown said that how Lyon is better and Ed and bob is coming back tell Gorg Brown to come on and pay his way and we will give him mony when he comes I had a letter from John Brown and he is coming to goin our compny there was 2 of our men run off but we do not want them the Cap says that he has got 100 dollars that he will spend to bring men here he has spent about 700 dollars all redy and he says that he wold spend 3 times as much if he had it he is the best capt in the camp I rote that he was sick and he was taken the measels well he is well again and he says that he will go and bring the boys here if he can get a pas away to day he has gon to see 
 
tell Dr McQuaid that it is all most an imposibility for me to get time to rite to him and he need not wate for me to rite to rite and give him my best respects you said that we had nothing to compair with our fence well I do not know there is some of the most butiful farms down here that ever I set my eyes on you said that it was raining there well we have had plenty of it I stood 14 hours in the rain and guarded I was on picket.
 
we have to go again some of these days there is no dainger none there is not a trater with in 6 miles of here ther is 6 men out of each compny detaild for to work they are going to throw up an entrenchment and then draw in the pickets and let the enemy cross the river there is plenty of men here we had a parade yesterday and ther was the nisest sight that ever I seen ther was 12,000 men in one fild and they wer all in ther uniform you ought to seen them the news gest come to the Capt that we have to go on picket guard well I lik that for we have good times of it when we get of duty then we can go where we pleas so as we do not go towards the enimy well sister I think that I have giv you all the news giv my best respects to Miss Stewart and all the rest of my frinds if eny such you find and do not wate for me to rite I want to here from you every day        Sanuel Addison Lyon

Dear Father
                        A few lines to you and I have give sis all the news and I do not know what to rite I sent home for mony but if you have not got it it is no diferns for the Capt wanted to give me mony severl times and then I can pay him when I get my mony in your letter you wanted to know what we got to eat well we get the best of bread and hard crackers Curton pies as we call them and we get meet and the best of [?] I am getting fat on them I never felt as stout in all my life as I am at the present time the Capt and Cennedy sends ther best respects to you the Cap was telling of going to get those boys but we have to go on picket gard at 9 oclock and he can not go all the Pennvania boys are here ther is 12 Reg her in this plase I must close for I hav not got eny more room write soon till then I remain your son
