September the 1st 1861
Dear Sister
I now take the plesur of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am still well and like camp life better than I expected we have been out working on the brest work this morning the compny had to go as it is the works of neednesity for we do not know the hour we will have to go to the battle field for this week or next will settle the mater I think the troops are in close quarters they cannot stay long apart look out for a fight soon we are redy to at any minute. the news her just come in there has been a battle foght but I supose that you have got the news before you get this Generl Butlers armey was victorious
I seen over the river to day wher I was on the hill It is a very beutifull country there is some of the best fruit out here that ever I tasted the boys her has been coming in to the city fast the past / few days they are prety well crowded here. We will have to go on picket guard to morow morning I think and that will be our last time then we will have to cross to the other side of the river there is nothing to rite as I rite so often I have all most forgoten to tell you that Mr graham is able to come to camp he will be here to morow tell John Johnston to rite I anserd his last letter and I have not got a letter from you for a good meny days I want you to rite as often as you can and tell me how you get along at the shirts in Pas last letter he told me that you wer gon to get beries you wanted me to find out if Mr simpson is in our Reg he is not he is in the 9th I found him the other day when I was over there. well I must close I have no more to rite and hoping to here from you soon till then I remain your Affectin Brother

Well Lureta A few words to you and they will be few the last time I herd from you you was sick but I supose you are well by this time if you are not they wold of told me I supose that you and saty stewart have good times this sumer but school will start then you will go I expect that I will not know you if I do not see you for 2 or 3 years but if we do not see one another we can remember each other by writing often then rite often for I like to here from home do not forget till then I remain your Brother
