Dear sister
I recieved your welcome letter on last Monday and have not answerd it as soon as I should of but you will excuse me this time I have so meny letters to write that I do not have much time to run about there ware a very grate excitement here to day there ware 2000 cavelyrmen went out to about 3 miles of our picket line and had a fight they took 13 prisners I saw them my self they wer reb men they had shot guns and old rusty sabers they had no uniform we lost one man and 2 wounded I saw the horse of one of the wounded men the side was all over with blood and one of the prisoners was leading him there is a report here that we will move on leesburgh in 3 or 4 days but the Col is building a stable to day it dose not look much like we wer going to move I have been about one mile from here to day choping wood for the company and O my hands they are all blisterd and sore as I have not done eny work for some time only march. I can warsh as well as eny woman ever I saw if you come out here I will give you a lesen it is wet this after noon and I will have nothing to do but to stay in my tent we have got a stove in the tent tell Pa that we are redy for him to come out now the stove cost us 4 dollars 80 cents apes and now we can cook that is another I lernt sinc I came to soldier I can cook as good as eny body only not so clean as what we get at home
we soldiers have got to eat some hard stuf things we wold not of eat at home is good here such as fat salt pork and hard bread that we will have to take an ax to brake them up we have got / a bakery at the head comisary and we will not have to eat enymore hard bread only when on a march tell will that if he wants to he can send that pistol but send a good meny bulets too. I cant get eny of those kind I recived 2 papers from Pa last night one was dated the 9 and the other was the 16th so you see that I do not get the papers in the right time I allso recieved 2 papers from John Johnston he is going to send me three evry week he has been the best kind of a frind to me ever since I came away from home and I think that I will have to write to him to day Tell Pa to write to me as soon as he gets my letter but he is good at answering my letters and he will do it I sent home 2 likenesses and 10 dollars at one time and 2½ at another I have 5 more to send home as soon as I here from the last I sent well I must close I am still well as usel write soon your brother
