Instruction to Sentries—
Take charge of this beat & all public property in view, in case of fire alarm the Guard. Salute all officers according to rank Arrest any one committing nuisance within the limits of the camp. The same instructions are in force at night with the exception of salutes to Officers. In no case Deliver up your musket to no one, no matter whether it is the Col that desires it. Your safety depends on your piece. Dont challenge till after Tattoo. When a person, or a number of persons approach after that time, you challenge "who goes there" If the answer is "Friend with the countersign" you say "Advance friend & give the Countersign" If the answer is Friends &c you say "Halt Friends Advance one & give the countersign" If the countersign is right you say "the countersign is right advance friends" If a person does not have the count. halt them & call the Corporal of Guard & the no of your post. The man before the Guard (No 1) when he sees the Officer of the day or any off. above the rank of Captain approaching (in the day) he turns to the Guard & cries "Turn out the Guard Officer of the day", or, Commanding Officer as the case may be. When the Sentry before the Guard is approached by the Rounds & challenges & they reply he says "Halt Grand rounds, turn out the Guard Grand rounds. While other sentries when answered "Grand rounds" say "Halt Rounds advance Sergt with the countersign"
Allow no citizens or negroes to enter camp unless having a pass or are accompanied by an officer No 4 will allow the teamster to pass the lines during the day No 5 the Bakers & Hostlers, also those connected with the QM Department
