Dear Father Mother Sisters and Brothers I now at this late hower begin to answer yours of the 12th the reason i have not wrote before is a good one i had no stamps and i did not like to send a letter without for it costs double at the end of the rout but to day i received a letter from Pheebe with some stamps so i hasten to answer your letter My health is about the same as ever and by your letter i sea you / are all well as usual as for Jessie i am glad he remembers my birth day enough to send me a present i will try and send him a present when i am home and he is off at war i shall keep that lock of hair as long as i live may be for it will remind me of many things first of my being far from home in the service of the Government also the caus of my being so far away from home third and last of the respect and esteam that i am held by one so young in years There is the best nuse that could be wished / for to night the paper sayes the Reble General Longstreet was dead also General Lee was badly woundid in the sholder. Lute General Grant is shoveing the rebles at all points ower armie has advanced over 30 miles in seven days and fought every day has captured near 50 pieces of artilery also near 10 thousand prisoners and small arms without number. every thing is nise the rebs in full retreat as it is near taps i will close for this time the weather is fine it has rained near every day for a week / the woundid are comeing in very fast near one third of them are slight woundid
