May 29th 1864
Dear Father Mother Sisters and Brothers I now take pen in hand to write you a few lines to inform you of my health & also my where abouts we are under marching orders and have been for several days but still stop at the same place my health is a bout the same as when i was home i was examined by the Colonell yesterday and tomorrow i expect to be examined by the / Board of Doctors as yet i cannot tell what the result will be but i am content with what ever comes. Father I received your kind and welcomb letter there was no Company or Reg on it and it was marked West Redding May 28 and i received it the 28 at about 3 oclock in the afternoon so i think there was some mistake in the dates for it takes 10 howers from new york and i got it about 9 howers after it left the office and that does not go down. The weather is very nise here and the nuse from the armie is good General Grant is now a bout crossing the / Pamunkey River on the right flank of the Rebel armie a bout 15 miles north of Richmond and soon you will hear of more glorious nuse than we have had the troops are going to the front every day and the one hundred days men are comeing in very fast nearly all the old troops have been sent to the front from the forts in and around the city and the forts are garisoned by the hundred days men the armie under General Grant is now about 25.000 stronger than it was before the fight and in a week if there is not a great deal of fighting his armie will be 50.000 / stronger than when he commenced his campaign the rumer is here that we are going to guard supplies for the armie from Washington to Port Royal on the rappihannock about 15 miles south of Fredricks Burg there is nothing more of importance to write so i will close I will write again as soon as i know where we are to go.
Leaveing you all in the care of God who doeth all things well.
I remain as ever your
loveing Sone & Brother
