Dear Father Mother Sisters & Brothers I now take pen in hand to write a few lines to you to inform you that my health is good that is as good as it has been for some time past hoping these few lines will find you all in good health I have given up the idea of getting a letter from you i have not had a letter from home for a long time about a week before i received / the turkies i have wrote three or fore times since but can get no answer the Doc told me some day since that he received a note from my Father that he had sent a box to me and asked me if i had wrote since i received them i told him i had he told me that that was enough that there was no use of him writing if i had done so all ready. we have killed one of the turkies and had it for Christmas we had a nise dinner we had roast turkey potatoes parsnips onions celery plumb puding mince & aple pies two or three kinds of kakes brandy & whiskey & egg nog / and wine if we wanted the day passed off very well and to make it better we had the nuse of the capture of Savanna by Sherman with no fighting of any amount he captured 33,000 bails of cotton 150 heavy guns 800 prisoners 190 cars 13 locomotives all in good order also 3 steamers and large quantity of ammunition the Reb General Hardee with about 8000 men left the night before the capture for Charleston this is what you may call a very nise prize for the Government the cotton alone is estimated at $20,000,000 of dollars. the weather here is warm the river is full of steamers taking soldiers below the 19th & 8th Armie Corps are on their way from / from the valey to Grant there is no snow of any account and the river has not been frozen so as to stop steamers but one day or two hoping i shall hear from you before my time is out i will bid you all good night.
