Head Quarters—
2d Division Army of the Shenandoah
Piedmont July 20th/61.
Dear Brother
We are here waiting for the cars to join Beauregard who has repulsed the enemy but is still threatened by overwhelming forces. Genl Patterson has slipped from us & we cant overtake him, expect to be with Beauregards Division by noon. Our Genl (Smith) has now command of this division consequently I am a grade higher in rank with increased duties. Bro. Allens Regiment is just opposite our quarters & goes forward in abt an hour in the same direction with us. He is now seated near me. My horse is lame & I am hoarse which is all that troubles me at present. All goes well otherwise.
My love & affectionate remembrance to V & the children
Yours truly
J T. [?]
