Miss Hester—
According to promise I will now endeavor to write you a short letter to inform you that I am again safe at home. I arrived on last Friday afternoon I would have been here one day earlier but I missed the boat at Washington and had to lie over a day there which I spent very pleasantly
I have been laboring under a severe attack of the Blues I invariably have them for several days after my return from the Empire City but I am happy to say that I am now quite well. I was well pleased with my visit home all I regret is / that I could not prolong my visit for another week but never mind "when this cruel war is over" perhaps I will get home again that is if some Reb dont take me off.

The report here is that the Rebs have evacuated Fredericksburg and that our forces now hold that position We have had no papers here since my return so we know very little of what is going on in the Army

Our Corps is under marching orders and I expect we will have another brush with the enemy before many days elapse. Our boys seem anxious for an engagement they think the only way to settle the "War" is to fight and so do I, and I dont care how soon it is settled. You must excuse this short letter and I promise you a better one next time hoping to hear from you soon

I am yours truly
Bob /
