My dear Hester
Your welcome letter of Dec 21st was duly received and I would have answered sooner but we have been so busy re-enlisting our Regiment as Veteran Volunteers ( and also under marching orders) that I could not possibly find time to write; we have now enough Veterans to enable our whole Regiment to go home, and we will start for Baltimore sometime this month when we arrive there we will receive furloughs for thirty days so you may expect me home about the 1st of February. I am glad I am coming home once more to see all that are near & dear to me

This morning we took the cars at Anderson and came to this place a distance of 20 miles / we expect to stop here till we start for home I have enjoyed myself first-rate since we have been in Tennessee. I have attended several dancing parties and I must say that the ladies of Tennessee & Alabama dance strong if not graceful.

What do you think of the Veterans? don't you think it was best to re-enlist? I know you love the Stars & Stripes, and you may rest assured that they shall never be trampled in the dust while Bob has an arm to defend them.

You must excuse me for this very short letter but I am so very busily engaged in making out enlistment papers for the my Company. So I will bid you good bye for the present

Yours as ever
Bob
