April 20th 1864

            My dear Hester
I received one letter from you on Saturday and one yesterday and would have answered immediately but my Company has been doing guard duty at the "Sanitary Fair" in this city from Monday morning till this evening so you see I am not to blame for not corresponding sooner

You ask me how I would like to come to New York and have you take my place in Baltimore. I think I should then dislike New York as I now do Baltimore / for Hester would be no nearer me than she is now. So you see it would make no difference however I like yourself wish this "cruel war was over" so that I could return to New York and live a peaceful life with those that are near and dear to me

I am enjoying excellent health at this time and am extremely sorry to hear that you are not well, but I sincerely hope that by the time this reaches you you will be entirely recovered I shall be uneasy until I hear from you again

You have no idea how much pleasure it gives me to see you so punctual in answering my letters and I assure you I will do my / best to be equally as punctual

You ask me who in my opinion is the best man for the presidency Lincoln is my man and the best General is Gen Grant

I am going to have my hair cut in a few days and then I will send you the desired locks

The drum is beating for drill now so I must close by sending my love to your folks and a good share to you

Yours Eternally
Bob
