Evening 9 O'clock
My dear Hester
Your welcome letter of the 25th came to hand last night, and I will now try to answer it; So you have been keeping house lately, well I am sure that is very useful employment; as you may someday want to keep house for yourself; I think you might tell me what your Uncle told you so that I could have a good laugh as well as you. I enjoy a good laugh very much
I am glad to know the album pleased you, but I thought you would like a fancy ring better than a plain one, but suit yourself and you'll suit me. You might as well tell me the rest about "Garrie being the smartest one of the family" I dont think it would "offend me"
If my folks act right I think it would be as well to call there occasionally, the only one that would be cross is Martha and you need not mind her; You should have gone to that wedding you speak of as they are not every day affairs, some of these fine days I hope to be at your wedding, what do you think about it
You must tell your father that I am very sorry that I did not call on him, but my visit was so short that I really did not have time, but I will make amends for it when next I visit New York if it be my luck to get there again. I dont think there will be any need of putting a string around my finger to remember it; I dont see how you make out that I owe you one cent, according to your statement you owe me one cent, and I demand immediate payment
I think Bob Inglis is about right you are very quiet now but I cannot say you was when I first became acquainted with you. I think now I have answered all your questions, and now for something else
Since my last we have had another move, to City Point & back a distance of some forty miles but there is a prospect of staying here some time, and I am fixed for the winter. I have my store up and my quarters comfortably arranged; (You must not forget to call on me on New Years as you promised to, and bring your friends with you) and having fine times generally, especially with the banjo, I am very glad I brought it with me, as it will help to kill many a dull hour this winter
The weather here since my return has been quite cold but it is time now to look for cold weather / the rainy season will soon set in here and then we will have some rough times; I have not as yet made up my mind about accepting Captaincy I cannot say what I will do until the Col returns. have you seen the Colonel and ex-Captain Littlejohn.
I thought when I set down to write I would be able to fill this sheet but I now see I was mistaken but its a pretty long letter, very long I think for me to write
Remember me to all enquiring friends (as you say) all the Generals desire to be remembered to you, and with my love and best wishes for your welfare I will close
Remaining
Yours ever
