My dear Hester
Yours of the 10th was received some days ago and as I had written to you the day before I received it I thought would wait a day or two before writing again, so to-night I seat myself to write a few lines. so to begin, I am pleased to know that you have been to our house and had a pleasant time. I hope / you did not forget to eat a few mouthfuls of corn beef & cabbage for me for that is a favorite dish of mine.

Everything is very quiet along our portion of our lines. the enemies lines and ours are in full view of each other but still neither party fires a shot while about two miles on our right they are constantly skirmishing, Grants new railroad has been extended about three miles and we now lay near the present terminus of the road.

It has rained incessantly since Friday and while I am writing the rain is pouring / down in torrents and no signs of clearing off, and to make matters worse my store smoked so bad I was forced to put the fire out and write in a cold tent; had not this storm set in at the time it did I think there would have been another move on our side. but it will be impossible now to move till the roads get dry again, and as this is the opening of the rainy season in this country it may be two weeks before we have a spell of fair weather. Times are very dull here. nothing of interest and no excitement prevailing, and just now I have / very little to do.

I have just written to Garrie and am going to have him come out here this winter I have a good situation for him here as sutlers clerk and I think it better for him to be out here to work than at home doing nothing dont you think so?

For the past few days I have been troubled with my old complaint of the diarrhea but not very badly and I hope to be alright again in a few days as soon as this storm is over. in all other respects I am doing very well I can think of nothing more to write so please give my kind regards to all enquiring friends and with my love to you

I close
Remaining as ever
Yours
Bob
