Robert S. Stedman to Hester Beaver, 9 January 1865

My dear Hester
Yours of Dec 26th and Jan 3d have been duly received. I was glad to learn that you have had such pleasant times lately and especially on New Years day. I am sorry that I cannot say as much for myself I had promised myself a good time but when the day came around I felt sad & lonely and disappointed for I had settled on being in your company on that day and having a pleasant time generally but there was no such good luck for me so I staid at home and hovered around the stove all day and retired to bed early in the evening; dont you think I must be in a good humor lately as all my / letters are nothing but a series of complaints.
On the 3d I was again compelled to move just as I had got my quarters in good shape I am now in the trenches with the Regiment; and have my tent surrounded by a large breastwork to protect me from the rebel bullets. most of the men here live in Bomb proofs but it takes so long to build one that I would rather take my chances against getting hit by them than build one. so long as I am protected from the bullets I am satisfied. everything is very quiet in our front no firing by day and but very little at night.
I was laid up again yesterday and to day but this evening I feel better and hope to be around alright again by tomorrow.
A very particular friend of mine who left this morning on a leave of absence and who has relatives in Elizabeth has promised to call and see you but I expect he will be there before / this reaches you. his name is Seth N. Hedges and a very fine young man will find him.
Remember me to your folks. Col Robinson sends his regards and with my love to you I close
Remaining
Yours only
Bob
