Robert S. Stedman to Hester Beaver, 16 February 1865
Before Petersburg Va
Feb 16th 1865
My dear Hester
Your welcome letter of the 10th was received last evening I would have answered it immediately but it rained very heavily yesterday and I was out in it from eight O'clock in the morning until 4 O'clock in afternoon and the consequence was I was completely wet through and had to change clothes and go to bed immediately to prevent my being sick I am obliged to be very careful of myself. Your letter was a great cheer for me after my days work and done me more good than a dose of medicine would this morning however I am all right again; I am glad to hear that your finger is doing so well no doubt by the time this reaches you it will be entirely well I hope so
In future I will try and write oftener I'm sure it is no trouble to write to you, as you seem to think it is; your advice about coming home is thankfully received. I detest telling a story for the sake of getting home although I am very anxious to get there but do not despair "while there's life there's hope" I may get home yet, there's no telling what may turn up but if I do I must hurry up for furloughs will soon be stopped.
My friend Hedges I think is bashful and possibly that may account for his not calling. when I see him I shall tell him that you pity him; I do not quite understand your last postscript you will please explain in your next.
The weather has been very disagreeable for the past few days rain most of the time. we did not go on that last raid I / wrote about but was kept in readiness about ten days. I dont think anybody was sorry that we did not go.
Col Robinson & Garrie send their respects. Remember me to your folks and with my love to you I close
Remaining
ever Yours
Bob
