Robert S. Stedman to Hester Beaver, 9 March 1865
Before Petersburg Va
March 9th 1865
My dear Hester
Your kind letter of the 2 inst is at hand, and I see by your letter you have been enjoying a Jersey storm It never storms there Oh no not at all, well while storming there we also have been luxuriating in the same delightful style; Yesterday while on duty I was wet through twice rather pleasant was it not. but then soldiers dont mind such trifles. I see also you have been indulging in that last of all honors the Blues and what is far worse the Jersey blues. The simple blues I am well acquainted with having had numerous attacks of them this winter. And I might give you some good prescriptions for them but the Jersey blues are I fear incurable and being totally unacquainted with the symptoms I fear I can / do nothing for you, but hope you will recover ere this reaches you.
Col Robinson departed for the north this morning. I accompanied as far as City point. his wife is unaware of his coming home, so I suppose there will be a joyful surprise in Jersey's apology for a City, i.e., Hudson City very soon. There are three officers in the regiment to go home before I do that is if the leaves are not stopped before that time. So do not despair there is room for a little hope yet.
Our Armies are still victorious with Sherman triumphantly marching through the heart of the enemies territory and Sheridan with his resistless Cavalry driving them through Virginia's pride the valley of the Shenandoah. And in fact with our Armies victorious at all points I see but little hopes for the Rebels or their cause. Garry sends his respects to you remember me to your folks and with my love to you I close
Remaining Yours Ever
