Charles C. Hopkins
Charles C. Hopkins was born on June 30, 1838, in Michigan to Frederick Hopkins. He enlisted in the Union army on May 10, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company B of the 2nd Michigan Infantry on May 25. The regiment took part in the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the siege of Vicksburg, the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg. He mustered out on May 24, 1865. Hopkins returned to Michigan after the war, and he probably married Eva C. Payne in Owosso, Michigan, on June 13, 1886. Their son Frederick was born around 1888, and Eva died sometime before 1900. Hopkins lived in Detroit and worked as a painter. He applied for a federal pension in May 1896 and eventually secured one. He retired in the early 1900s, and by 1910, he was living in his son Frederick’s household. He died of hemiplegia on December 16, 1911.
