William F. Smith to James B. Fry, 21 November 1863
Head Quarters Chief Engr D.C.
Chattanooga Tenn Nov 21st/63

Col Fry
Provost Marshal
I take great pleasure in recommending to your favorable notice William Brisbane formerly Lt Col of the 49th Pa. Regt

His friends are desirous of his getting a position in the Invalid Corps which I hope may be effected.

Lt Col Brisbane served under me in the Army of the Potomac for 15 months, quite frequently in command of his regiment, with gallantry and ability.

During the late Militia Campaign he commanded a Brigade in my Division and again evinced excellent qualities for a commander—I think the appointment of Col Brisbane in the Invalid Corps has been well merited.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Servt.
Wm. F. Smith
Brig. Genl.
