Joseph D. Baker to Susanna Baker, undated
Dear Mother—I should have written to you long ago but I could not on account of sickness I know you will be very uneasy about me, but dont fret, I'm getting better. Mother I fear I will never be the man I once was; I'm broken down with disease & hard marches. I am in the Hospital at Millcreek near Fortress Monroe Va. I dont like to / complain but the fact is, we are but poorly cared for. Now I am going to do a thing which I hate the worst kind of a way. It is to ask you to send me a couple of dollars if you have it to spare for I'm out of change. I have been here since shortly after I wrote to home last and I do not know anything of where our regt is but I suppose if you have written to me lately that that the letters are wherever the regt is. Now please / write just as soon as you get this and direct to Millcreek Hospital
near Fortress Monroe
Va

Give my love to Lizzie & Jimie
Uncles folks & and all enquiring
friends and believe me
            your Son J. D. Baker.

Write me a long letter
and tell me all the news
I shall wait impatiently for
the answer. Keep up heart.
dont fret dear Mother.
                        J. D. Baker

Dont put it in the directions what Co. or Regt. I belong to or it will go to the Regt instead of coming here. Direct to Millcreek Hospital
near Fortress Monroe Va
