Dear Mother
I feel much to blame for not writing long ago, but as I dayly expected to be sent within our lines I deferred till I would be there. Now however I know not when that will come to pass so I will write on such material as my scanty means will permit. I was taken prisoner on the 2d day of July in the heat of action about sundown. I am not wounded. Thank kind Goodness my health is good for such a place as Belle Island
Our Government has sent us prisoners clothing I got a change in [faded]. You can write to me here & let me know what is going on at home & among the neighbors and I wish you would let me know how Har Hurry & the other boys (especially Tait Black) are progressing
Direct thus:

I hope you are all well
Remember me in prayer
Do not forget to answer
this if it be so lucky as
to reach you No more
now from your Son
