Horace G. Babcock to Charlotte L. Lasher, 4 October 1862
Near Sharpsburg. Oct 4th 62

Friend Lottie
I received your very kind letter in due season and you dont know nor can you imagine with what pleasure I read your letter I meant to have answered it long ere this but I have had so many letters to write it has taken up a good share of my time besides I am so poor a writer as well as slow a writer that I do not write more than two letters during the day I am quite well at present Wallace is well I believe. My Brother that was wounded at bull Run is getting some better. everything seems to be quiet along the Potomac as far as I know you no doubt have heard the report that we coming to Harrisburg soon that has been the report for some time I presume / we shall go by way of Richmond. Gordonsville. Winchester. or some other place where the Rebels have congregated or assembled together it is sad to think of the thousands and tens of thousands that have fallen since this war began and especialy the young portion of our army. many that were sent forth with tears and the prayers of kind Parents Brothers and Sisters They fondly dream of the time that they will be restored to them again They dream not their son or brother lies helpless on the field of Battle or perhaps cold in the embrace of death and while no sculptured monument marks his last resting place, while his remains perhaps lie bleaching upon a hostile soil far from friends home and kindred His pure principles and earnest devotion to his country and his name will ever be honored and respected—

Lottie, have you been over to make Hattie Ostrander that visit there has been so much talk about or did you prefer to wait until some future time I suppose your Father is doing his falls work. I would like to dig potatoes or husk corn a day or so to see how it would seem.

does Maria and Manta live at Ezra Rifles this season I wrote to them this summer but have not heard from them since. how does Setta get along have not heard from her in some time

I will close as I have nothing to write of interest please write as soon and often as convenient.

this from your ever Remembered
Friend, Horace
