Horace G. Babcock to Charlotte L. Lasher, 14 December 1863
Marion Mills Va. Dec. 14 63
Friend Lottie
I will improve the present moment in writing a few lines to you this morning. no doubt you wonder why I have not written before. I wrote to you about three weeks ago but presume you never received it as I have not heard from you since. I have written but very little the past two months for the reason that we have been on the move so much that it was very difficult to send letters out or to get any mail. I suppose you know that we are here near Marion Mills. Will probaly stay here this winter We have seen rather hard times this fall and winter so far I can tell you, but we have got settled down for the winter I hope We have good winter quarters built. We have just finished our house with the exception of the door which will be finished / soon. We are guarding the Railroad near bull Run the Guerillas are a good deal of trouble along this Railroad although they have not troubled us yet Col. Harding of the 12th Reserve was shot yesterday by some Guerrilas while riding along the Railroad a short distance above here, but I do not apprehend much trouble here with us. I will draw my letter to a close as I have not much time to write this time but hope we will soon get through with our work so that we can have plenty of time to read and write. Write soon and write all the news. give my respects to all friends. tell Cass as soon as we get settled down I shall write to her. this from your Friend
