Samuel E. Bryant to Charlotte L. Lasher, 20 April 1864
Camp Near Bristoe Station Va
April 20th 1864.

Friend Lottie
Your kind and sympathetic letter of the 10th inst is at hand and the contents being thoroughly perused, I deem it worthy an immediate answer.
Hoping you will excuse the familiar style in which I address you, I will attempt to give you a description of my present residence. Our camp is located in a pine grove, east of the "Orange & Alexandria Rail Road", which runs north and south, and south of the camp is a small stream running eastward, the country is quite level and affords us a splendid view for several miles around.

In regard to your feeling of gratitude expressed in your letter, allow me to say that it is highly appreciated by one / of that "Noble Band" of Patriots. believe me, that nothing but "Amor Patrie" persuaded me to sacrifice the comforts of life, notwithstanding a pleasant home and many kind friends (such as Mr & Mrs P.)

Hoping to convey my assurance to you, that your letter is highly appreciated, I will venture to request your correspondence as I am often lonesome for the want of something to amuse myself with. I would be very happy could I advance some future information concerning hostilities, notwithstanding I believe a tedious summer campaign is inevitable, and I trust that God will grant us success in the hour of battle, that peace may be restored to our once happy but now distracted country.

Before I close, allow me to ask if you were ever made acquainted with my name either through written or verbal / conversation with others, previous to the "Enigma". I judge from the familiarity connected with your letter that you have.

I will now ask to be excused for this time, as I am officer of the "Picket line" and will have to visit it before dark Please remember me as

Your Friend, and would be
Correspondent

P.S. No. 2. I should be very happy to exchange photographs with you unless it would cause grief in the masculine breast of the one chosen            S.E.B.
