Fort Marcy Va. Apr 5/64
 
Dear Sister
                        I came to my company today it has been raining here for the last twenty four hours I have got entirely well our company is in Virginia now we have a very nice place here we have a good Church Library reading room &c and every thing looks well here. you say I had beter try to get the bounty but it is of no use for I enlisted previous to that and was credited to Pittston so it would be of no use for me to try to get it for the / commissioners would not give it to me for I was not credited to Scranton I was credited to Pittston I will send you some money in the course of a few days if I can get a chance to send it to the Express Office I will send it by Express for safe keeping it is a kind of a lonesome country out here in Virginia you can walk miles and not see a fence everything is very dear here Butter is only sixty cents per pound Molases thirty cents a quart and every thing els in proportion twenty cents and twenty five for a small pie well supper is ready now I will finish 
 
after supper now as I have had supper I will resume my letter I have been down to see Mrs Archer this afternoon I was down to Mrs Barnes but Mrs Archer is over to the Hospital and I did not see her and it is so muddy I can not walk out much & I will close now with love to all hoping to hear from you soon
