Ruth S. Whiteman (maiden name: Hackett) was born on March 5, 1834, in Pennsylvania to John and Ruth Hackett. She married George J. Whiteman around 1860, and they had at least five children: George, born around 1862; Lewis, born around 1868; Nelson, born around 1869; Cynthia, born around 1874; Alice, born around 1878. They lived in Harrison, Pennsylvania, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1870, they owned $1,500 of real estate and $650 of personal property. Her husband died on February 6, 1917, and she died of “senile debility” in Harrison on December 2, 1918.
