George Taylor Nichols was born on November 7, 1832, in Savannah, Georgia. He married Sarah Battey, and their son Alfred was born around 1856. He worked as a merchant in Savannah, and his wife worked as a seamstress. By 1860, they owned $150 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property.
In August 1861, he received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in Company D of the 1st Georgia Infantry. He fell ill in late September 1861 and went home on sick leave. He resigned on November 15, 1861.
He returned to Savannah after leaving the army, and he earned a living as a shoe dealer. By 1870, he owned $2,000 of real estate and $2,500 of personal property. His wife died on October 26, 1894, and by 1900, he was living in his son’s household in Savannah. On July 3, 1906, he fell while “alighting from his buggy” and broke his hip. He died in Savannah on August 28, 1906.
