Miss. Annie M. Henry
Sparta Wis.
My Dearest Annie:—
I wrote you a letter last Sunday and have been looking for one from you ever since. I came in from picket this morning and felt almost sure that I should get a letter from you but I am disappointed again.
I have nothing new to write you dear to day and was it not for disappointing you and breaking my promise I should postpone it a / few days longer. The troops have all left here except our Brigade and two three batteries of Heavy Artillery, and as we have to keep up our old picket lines it brings us on duty almost evry day. On Monday and Tuesday last I was on duty both days.
Notwithstanding hard work and exposure my health is very good. This is the choicest of Heavens blessings and while surrounded by sickness and death it seems doubly precious. Last Tuesday morning eight of our Officers were reported unfit for duty. The next day we had two funerals. The next day another, and to day we have another. From the prospects in the hospital we shall have as many or / more this week. Surrounded by such circumstances as as these, and enjoying as good health as I ever did in my life how can I believe otherwise darling than that your earnest prayers in my behalf are heard and answered. Let us put our trust in God alone and although the future may look dark and gloomy, all will yet be well. From present indications we shall probably be here for some time yet. I might write you a long letter dear but I do not feel like it to day, and I can express it all in this. I love you as faithfully as ever.
Humbly praying Gods bless-
to be with you.
I am ever Yours G. Haw
