George Haw to Annie M. Henry, 1 December 1863
On Board Steamer
Fanny Ogden
Dec 1st 1863

My Dearest Annie:—
I wrote you a few lines yesterday while at Cairo. We reach Memphis sometime today and I thought I would write you again as we shall not have an opportunity to mail letters again before we reach Vicksburg. Our journey thus far has been very pleasant. We have no snow nor ice and this morning the sun shines quite warm. I have had no ague nor any other unpleasant symptoms yet.

On Sunday night while / on the cars I got but little sleep, but last night I went to bed early and rested well. We have excellent accommodations and evry thing bids fair for us to make a quick and pleasant trip. I almost wish sometimes darling that I had brought you along. If I have to stay long I shall regret many times that I did not. I know that you would have enjoyed yourself so much more as well as myself and your happiness and welfare dearest Annie is now the chief object I desire to live for. I can not feel as I did when I left you before dear. I loved you then but not as I do now. Nothing shall be left undone / that I can do that will bring me back to you soon darling. If all fails you shall come to me, for I care but little to live separated from you.

I trust you will enjoy yourself to some extent dear while I am absent. let us trust implicitly in Him who controlls all things.
