George Haw to Annie M. Henry, 6 December 1863
On Board Steamer Thos. E. Trith
Sunday Afternoon Dec. 6th 1863

My Darling Wife:—
Time passes on and Sunday is here once more. What a long, very long week the past has been to me.

We were unfortunate enough at Memphis to get on a very slow boat and it will be tomorrow afternoon probably before we reach Vicksburg. We may possibly reach Milliken's Bend this evening and lay there until morning. This forenoon we had preaching which made the time pass a little more pleasantly than it has for the past three or four days, as I / wrote you in my last I certainly never passed such a lonesome week in my life. You no doubt have had the same feelings darling and can better imagine mine than I can describe them to you. If I could be with you to day darling it seems to me that I would be willing to make any sacrifice. We must exercise patience however my dear girl and hope and pray that the good Lord will favor us and permit us soon to enjoy each others society again. My health has been about the same as when I left you. Sometimes I feel quite well and sometimes not so well. If my health does not improve I / do not think there can be any doubt about my resignation being accepted. I certainly can be of no use in the Army. I would like to write you something that would be interesting but I can think of nothing, my thoughts are almost evry moment with you darling and I have no disposition to think of any thing else. The weather has been very pleasant, and today it is quite warm. The nights however are cool and chilly. I have not written to any one yet but you dear, since I left you. When you write home give my love to all and tell them I will write when I get to Natchez. I feel anxious to know how / Gilbert is I will leave the balance of this sheet until we reach Vicksburg.

Vicksburg Dec 7th 1863
Dear Annie:
We have just reached here and learn that our Regt. is here or 8 or 10 miles out of the city towards Hanes Bluff. We shall try and go out sometime this afternoon to the Regt. I will write you again the first opportunity. I hope this will find you in good health and spirits. Be as hopeful as possible darling do not give way to despondency. All will yet be well.
