George Haw to Annie M. Henry, 30 March 1864
Cairo Ill. March 30th 1864
My Darling Annie:—
I reached here this afternoon about 5 oclock just in time for me to report today. I have just been over to the depot and found one of our men on his way home on furlough. He tells me that our Regt. is with the expedition up Red River, that they were expected back soon after he left, and that they probably would not stay at Vicksburg long after they got there. He also tells me that he does not think that I was discharged when he left as he had not heard of it. If I was not discharged when he left which was on the 25th inst. it is useless for me to stay here expecting to hear from you, and as I am anxious to get to Vicksburg as soon as possible if I have to go, I have about made up my mind to go on tomorrow if a good fast steamer comes along. I will not start until after dinner if I can avoid it as I shall expect to hear from you in the forenoon if at all. As it is too late to mail this tonight I will finish and mail it tomorrow. I am very lonesome darling tonight but fervently hope soon to be with you again. Good night my dear loved wife Geo.
