Headquarters 33rd Wis. Vol.
Black River Bridge Miss.
April 6th 1864
My Dearest Annie:—
We reached Vicksburg yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock and as the train was to leave at 4 o'clock I had no time to write you from there. I reached here last night about an hour after dark and found what little of our Regt. is left here a short distance from the bridge. Nearly all of our Regt. is with the Red River Expedition
As soon as I got to Vicksburg I went to Gen. McPherson's old headquarters and found a part of his staff still there. I examined the records and found that my resignation was recd. / there on the 13th of March the day after the Capt. Codle our Div. Adjutant Gen. wrote me that he would forward it.
Gen. McPherson approved it and forwarded it to Gen. Sherman so I think there is no doubt now darling but I shall get my discharge between now and the last of this month.
Had I been two hours later in reaching Vicksburg I should have been unable to obtain this information as McPherson's Staff closed up all their business at 4 o'clock yesterday and will probably go up the river today. I am very glad that I started just when I did although I had a severe chill on Monday night and another last night. I fell tolerable well this morning and shall / take a dose of quinine evry 3 hours during the day which I think will prevent any more chills at present. Was it not for the prospect of soon being with you again darling I should be discouraged for I am satisfied that nothing short of a change of climate and the comforts of home will afford me any permanent relief. The weather here is allready quite warm.
I hope that I shall not have to wait long before hearing from you dear. When I can not hear from you at least once a week I can not help feeling very anxious and the days seem almost without end. The army may contaminate evry other virtue but it certainly is a good school in which to / learn patience. I have not as much to discourage me now however as when I returned before, and I will endeavor not to complain.
Write to me often darling. Be a good girl and my constant prayer shall be that God will bless and protect you from all harm.
Ever your devoted Husband
George
