George Haw to Annie M. Henry, 2 April 1864
On Board Steamer Hannibal
Saturday April 2nd 1864
My Darling Annie:—
contrary to my expectations when I last wrote you I did not leave Cairo until yesterday evening. I was at the telegraph office a short time before we left but found nothing there for me. I would have wrote to you again from there but had not time after the boat came in. We expect to reach Memphis between nine and ten o'clock tonight where I hope to be able to mail this. If nothing happens to delay us we shall probably reach Vicksburg Tuesday night / sometime. I shall probably send you a letter from there before going out to Black River. I will if I can. I hope I shall hear from you dear by the next mail that comes after I get there. I shall be very anxious about you and especially if you go down the river. If Mother comes and you go to Ben's write me immediately after you get there. I can not explain to you darling just how I feel today. It seems as though I am leaving all that is dear to me behind. My thoughts are constantly with you and the few short days I spent in your society seem to me now more like a pleasant dream / than a reality. Time now drags wearily on my hands and each day is to me almost a week. I shall work hard to get back to you as soon as possible. I ascertained while in Cairo that I should have to have a certificate from the Ordnance office, also one from the 2d Auditor at Washington before I can draw my pay on my discharge. I wrote to those officers while in Cairo and requested them to send me the necessary certificates. Let us continue to hope and pray my darling wife that we may not be separated much longer.
With love to all
I am ever
Your Faithful & Loving Husband
George /
