William M. Owen to William P. Johnston, 14 July 1864
Head Qrs Batt' Washington Artillery
Near Petersburg July 14 1864
Colonel
Permit me to introduce to you my cousin Sergeant John Harris of the Maryland Battery C.S.A.
Sergt Harris visits Richmond for the purpose of looking after some matters concerning himself with the Department. I will esteem it a favor should he require your advice or assistance, if you will extend it to him. The Sergt has been a soldier in the Maryland Battery since 1861.
We are having the dullest time imaginable here, pounding away at each other morning & evening. Grant is ex-pounding the "law of nations" upon the innocent bricks & mortar of Petersburg, thereby convincing all unbelievers of the necessity of returning to the sheltering folds of that same "Old Flag", or run the risk of losing ones head by the application of a 30 pdr shell. We trust Early will apply the same dose to the good people of Washington.
When you write to Genl Preston remember me to him. When this "little job" is over I think I will join him.
I am Col Truly Yours,
Wm M. Owen
