Camp near Corrinth Miss Apl. 16th/62
Maj. Genl B. F. Cheatham.
Sir
I have the honor to submit to you the following report of services rendered by me from the 4th to the 6th inst. in charge of the sick and convalescent of your division sent from Bethel spring. After arriving at Corrinth I repaired at once to the Commander of the post for the purpose of finding the whereabouts of the Medical Director, into whose charge I was to deliver most of the sick of the division, together with sealed packages from Regimental Surgeons. failing to find a Medical Director at the post (for all had repaired to the battle field) I called again on Col Deshea the Commander of the Post for instructions. he directed me to assume the responsibility of breaking the sealed packages, which I found to contain furloughs for nearly or quite all the sick sent down. I therefore proceeded to ship them as speedily as possible, to the following places (viz.)
7th Kentucky Regt. 99 men to Macon Miss.
9th Tennessee " 30 " "
2d " " 9 " "
154th In " " 16 " "
15th " " 28 " "
Total 182
Blythe's Miss Reg 56 " sent to Oxford Miss
2d Tenn. Reg. 2 " " " /
I completed this arduous task about noon on Sunday the 6th inst. One man whose name I did not learn died on the platform at the depot, he had been discharged some days previously from Col Blythe's Reg.
One thing must be made mention of before closing this report and that is the shameful disregard and neglect of Commanders of Companies, Batallions and Regiments in furnishing their sick in transitu to Hospitals with rations the none of those under my charge had anything to eat from Friday morning until late in the evening on Saturday, and had through the kindness of the Asst. Surgn. of the Genl Hospital at Corrinth I procured cooked rations for them. the convalescent likewise fasted until Sunday noon when rations was drawn for them.
