Cosmore G. Bruce
Cosmore G. Bruce was born on February 15, 1835, in Bridgeport, Ohio, to Calvin and Electa Bruce. His father was a land agent who owned $500 of personal property by 1850. The family lived in Canaan, Ohio, and he attended preparatory classes at Oberlin College in the early 1850s. He moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, in the late 1850s. He and his father went into business together as Bruce & Son, Land Agents & Bankers.
 
He married Emily S. Ward on July 30, 1857, and their son Charles was born around 1859. By 1860, he was working as a land agent in Painesville, Ohio, and he owned $5,000 of real estate and $1,500 of personal property. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in the early 1860s and operated a war claims agency. He also began editing The Army Herald in December 1861 and The Soldiers Journal in August 1862.
 
He moved to New York City in the 1860s, and by 1870, he was working as a sewing machine manufacturer. He declared bankruptcy in the early 1870s. He died sometime after May 1873.
