May the 20th 1863
Dear wife i seat myself to let you know how I am getting along I am getting some better some ways my legs are better my breast hurts me yet when I cough pretty bad I am [faded] on my left side a little not much and I cant lie on my back hardly any yet when i turn on my back it seems like I will smother I cant get breath enough well Cul i have not done any thing at all since I come up here I never have even answered to my name at roll calls yet Cul we had orders to move this morning at six oclock up nearer the division we did not know where to they will leave me the morning the Colonel told me this morning he would send me to guard a house and let me stay there a week or so I am mighty glad of the chance take good care of Tomy toe and get it well
