Dear Marshall
I reced yours of the 15th and was rejoiced to learn that you were well, as well as to hear the good news from all my friends. I am scribbling this note to night as I am afraid I will not have a chance again for a few days. the Regt marches in the morning. I dont know where to. I will write to you again the first chance I get we are cooking rations for three days march. I am in excellent health and spirits. it is very cold here in the hills now but we are well clothed

I am told that this is Halloweve night. if so I hope you are having a good time I have a drop of mountain dew (native) which was presented to me by a friend to night, and this being Halloweve and my last night in Buckhannon I will celebrate it before I get under my blanket by takin a wee smather and in doing so I will drink a health to "them that's awa' " consider yourself touched &c
