6 P.M. on the field
Sept 18th 1862
Dear Marshall
A great battle on yesterday, our side victorious. our regt was engaged on the right. our loss about 50 all told happy to tell you I am all right, thankful for it.
to day there has been a truce, the enemy are still in front. we hold the battle field, the dead are being buried. a great slaughter of the enemy. expect to renew the fighting tomorrow. Little Mac is well and present everywhere. we have captured many prisoners. I hear of our troops coming to our support expect to whip if we fight again. I think and hope that we have got Stonewall this time. three wounded in our company including the Lieut in command.
Ever Yours
James Clarke
