Dear Cousin I take the time to wri you a few lines in answer to your kind letter wich come to hand the 12 of last month while in Maryland I was glad to her you and all the family was well We have had a long march sence we left Fredericksburg in to Pennsylvania & Maryland I need not say any thing in regard to the fight as you hav all ready herd however I will state to that I was in it / and by the help of god got thrugh saif We lost 18 men kild & wounded in the fight out of our Company I hav not seen Cousin Luis in over 12 months but I herd that he was well a few weeks a go I serpose you hav herd of the fall of Vicksburg and port Hutson but this shold not disharten us it shold make us fight the harder for our homes and liberties for it will not do to giv it up and submit to Lincolns over baring negro laws for my part I had / rather fight til I die than to come up on an equality with a negro. I hav herd sum cannons firing in the direction of Fredericksburg to day but I think it is Cavalry a fighting a littel as the firing has seast I got a letter from Father the other day they are all well as comon but John he has not bin well in some time he sed that he had joined a company for State defens I am a fraid he cant stand the camp so well but State servis / is not as hard as Confederate Servis and he will not hav to march like we do I will bring my letter to a close as it is geting dark this leaves me well hoping it may find you well and in the enjoyments of a hapy life
