Alfred Hall
Alfred Hall was born on November 15, 1809, in Chatham (present-day East Hampton), Connecticut, to Samuel and Ruth Hall. He married Maria Lydia Whiting on September 10, 1833, and they had at least six children: Samuel, born around 1834; Gordon, born around 1836; James, born around 1844; Mary, born around 1847; John, born around 1849; and Alice, born around 1852. They lived in Portland, Connecticut, and he earned a living as a lawyer. By 1860, he owned $20,000 of real estate and $20,000 of personal property. A decade later, he owned $20,000 of real estate and $120,000 of personal property. According to an early biographer, he gave up working as a lawyer for several years to become “business manager of the well known Shaler and Hall quarry company.” He eventually reopened his law office. He died on September 11, 1873.
