John C. Barton to Family, 2 February 1863
Camp Reynolds Va
Feb 2nd 1863
Dear Friends
This evening finds me well as usual, and I am quite anxious to hear from you for it has been quite a long time since I received a line from you.
We have not moved and are as yet in our comfortable winter quarters, but we will undoubtedly leave here in a short time. I think our destination is Charleston situated 36 miles down the river. I hope we will go there for then we can get news from home sooner and hear the news.
My chief occupation lately has / been fishing and I tell you it is sport to fish here. I caught a salmon yesterday that weighed five pounds. I tell you it was a splendid fish. I presented it to Mrs Hayes our Col. wife who is here with him and she gave me a nice can of tomatoes and complimented me highly.
I am in my old place and will probably remain here. There is no news and plenty of mud
My love to all
Your Boy
