Charles W. Personius to Family, 15 January 1863
Harpers Ferry Jan 15th 1863
Dear loved ones at home
I will pen a few lines to you this evening to let you know that we are enjoying good health and fine weather and fine spirits and hope that all of you are in the same fix All is quiet on the Potomac with the exception of a floating rumor that the Rebs are within eleven miles of this place but dont be worried any about it for such stories dont trouble old Co. G not the least bit
We received another letter from home to day stating that all were well except Ma and I hope she has fully recovered by this time for there is nothing to be more dreaded than sickness I dont see how grandma can be sick so long day after day year after year and yet not ever even murmur once Our company all seem to enjoy pretty good health at present there is but one in the hospital out of our company and that is J. B. Stearns I think he was there when Pa and Ella were here / and the Home fever troubles him more than any thing else but maybe I am mistaken so I wont say for certain
Dick Personius has turned cook for the company and L Smith the same What would two women think if they had to cook for a hundred men. well I dont know what they would think but guess that they would want some reinforcements especially some of the younger ladies of these times you know times are changing from what they once were and if you dont believe it ask grandma and she will tell you
Oh dont it do me good to see some of these Va gals go splashing through the mud about three inches deep with their paper shoes and silk dresses on aint it rich to think about and then to top off the climax have a squad of soldiers marching toward her making her retreat or step into out in the mire about three or four inches deep but that will do for this time my sheet is nearly filled so that I will have to close hoping to get another letter soon
good night
