Harpers Ferry Dec 26th 1862
Dear Mother
I take this chance of writing a few more lines this morning to keep you posted of our whereabouts and health we are all well and hope this may find you the same it is warm pleasant weather down here all of which makes it very pleasant for us to view the country but this is the most horrible looking place I ever was in it is nothing but rocks and mountains as charlie says we have to look up three times to see the tops and here where we are stationed it will make me dizzy to look out of the windows down on the street now I will tell you a bout our bad luck we came on to Baltimore as nice as a pin and when we left the Baltimore Depot we left our trunks in care of the baggage master. he was to transport them to the Washington Depot where we take the cars for Harpers Ferry he told us we would have to hurry in order to be in time for the express train he said our trunks would not get in time for that train but we could they would be brought on the train in the evening and we arrived here at noon and by managing that way we have lost our trunks at least I think so the Captain has telegraphed twice to Baltimore but has not recovered the trunks yet / Ma words can not tell how I feel here I am dirty as a pig and Pa is dirty still and the idea of loosing all my clothing why Ma it has spoiled my visit Pa and Charlie sympathizes with me considerable but the Captain laughs at me and says I am foolish to mourn about my trunk I have thought of what Grandma told me she says I have pride to much in my nice cloths Pa says if I will keep it still he will help me when we go home he dont like the idea of having the trunk lost in his care he does not want it known about from home and if you can keep it from Charlotte and Grandma do so the mail is about ready to go so I will close we have [paper fold] since we came and they is so many in the captains room so good by from Ella
