July 19th          In the woods five miles from Atlanta

Dear Parents
Your welcome letter of the 11th I recd last evng we are in line of battle we crossed the river Sabbath afternoon marching till 11 P.M. tired and weary I laid down with mosquitoes, fleas and lice around me we are troubled with breaking out of large sores something like the scurvy if we could have some vegetables I think it would be good for us but we have pork and hard tack Yesterday morning we started in line of battle for three miles our skirmishers being thrown out drove the pickets in (of the enemys) and we came to the turnpike of the Atlanta and Marietta road when we marched in double file till we came to their works formed in line of battle where we have been ever since firing commenced on our right and left quite early this morning but as yet we have not had anything to do yet there is plenty to do and if we get the city it will be quite an undertaking only think of driving the enemy for nearly 150 miles in one campaign capturing the towns and cities of Marietta and Atlanta / in one campaign I think that we have done better than the army of the potomac have done and ere this reaches you I hope you will hear of the capture of Atlanta evrything has been removed out of the city so deserters say I hope Loomis will live long after the war is over and may the Parents with their three sons live to meet each other around the family circle I have not recd any pay yet dont know when I shall get any money from the Govmt hope to before long however when you write to L. give him my love and tell him to answer my letter the boys from Crom are all well only Ed Black he was kept back at Marietta our regiment is rather small our number [?] only two hundred and fifty men since we left New Haven 1000 strong and have had as many as we have got added to it by substitutes the weather is quite warm I hope that you will not worry about me I will close with love
