Dear Parents                                                              
Your verry welcome letter of the 22nd I recd yesterday coming since I wrote we have fallen back to the river six miles where we commenced to fortify when the rebs charged on us Charley Wilcox is wounded in the thigh and Henry J Salisbury of Portland was taken prisoner yesterday three hundred were sent out to see where they were I was one of them we went about four miles when we run on their pickets we deployed out as skirmishers and drove them into their trenches found them in great force so we came back without any loss on our side two verry sudden deaths have occurred in the Regiment a soldier in Co. H. was out around five minutes before he died and a young fellow in Co. B. was drawing the charge from his gun when it went of the ram rod entering his left side and coming out at the right side he did not live long only the day before one from his Co was killed on the skirmish line our regiment was musterd for two months more pay making eight months they owe us eleven more months and the 20th time are out and I hope the boys will not reinlist but give some of our patriotic friends at home a chance / to reinlist enlist for Abraham the first Old Abe never has shown any energy in the fourth year of the war the North is in danger of being run over Lee goes where is a mind to but old Hood has to keep one eye on Sherman and the other on his flank my paper and envelopes are borrowed I am obliged to you for the stamps and money and would like more of the same sort
