Dear Parents
I recd your welcome letter yesterday was glad to hear of home after two months of toilsome marching Shermans vandals (as the Rebels term us) are once more in camp after burning and destroying evry thing to their hearts content we have not known what defeat was since Crazy Billy as we call him took command of us but many of our comrads are pining in Southern bastiles many are wounded while others have given up their lives for their country the loss in the 20th losses in the battles of the 14th 16th and 19th was 80 eighty Barry and John Gosman of Co D were killed Morris Bailey Sergt Goodrich and Corpl Dick Moy / John Ilsworth were wounded Patric Cuttis was taken prisoner the left of our regmt sufferd heavy our Companies range from 7 to 10 men rather smaller than when we left New Haven 10,000 strong we have had 300 recruits since then but they have played out as soon as the army gets clothed I suppose we will again be on the war path our time is out in August the Cromwell boys were well when I saw them I recd a good long letter from Loomis by the same mail that yours come in there is not much news at present Genl Sherman says he has the best army that ever trod on American soil and at a word from him 120,000 men will sound the war cry I will now close Remember me to all / enquiring friends write soon
